GATES is an online comic written and illustrated by Hal Hefner.

It officially launched on January 1, 2011 and be updated on weekly basis.  Following the completion of the online comic series on this website, the work will packaged up into a uniquely designed collectible book published by Heavy Metal Magazine. Gates is dedicated to the music of Ronnie James Dio and the Art of Frank Frazetta. They were two legends of the metal and fantasy genre that paved the way for a project like Gates to come to fruition. Dio, for his work on the original Heavy Metal movie and the constant use of fantasy themes on his album covers, videos and more and Frazetta for his amazing art and craft that defined the field of fantasy illustration in the twentieth century. May their memories, creative spirits and their souls live on forever.
