Is Boba Fett The Most Overrated Star Wars Character Ever?

by Hef on December 31, 2011 at 12:37 am

Boba Fett.

Is he the best bounty hunter in the Galaxy or just a scruffy voiced supporting character with a cool helmet and a jetpack?

Is he a fringe character whose cool outfit outweighs his actual contribution to the actual plot of the original trilogy?

boba fett action figure hal hefner Is Boba Fett The Most Overrated Star Wars Character Ever?

Star Wars fans worldwide have loved Boba Fett  ever since his first appearance in the Empire Strikes Back.  However, his mystique began prior to the movie, with the Kenner line of Star Wars action figures and his appearance in comics and TV. The Boba Fett figure is by far the most famous Kenner mail-away toy, of all time. Originally advertised as coming with a firing rocket on the back of the packaging in 1979, none of the figures actually mailed that included the special feature. However, Kenner prototypes of the legendary Fett figure do exist and they are highly coveted by fans of Boba Fett, hardcore Star Wars geeks and toy collectors alike. Boba Fett would first appear animated in The Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978 as a mysterious figure who betrays Luke Skywalker from a giant monster, only to be revealed as a bounty hunter working for the evil Darth Vader.

Boba Fett was a brilliantly “played” marketing ploy.

THE CASE FOR BOBA FETT’s COOLNESS:

Ultimately the enigmatic action figure would become the most talked about character from the Empire Strikes Back, which is highly regarded by many as the best Star Wars film of all time.  A bounty hunter hired by Darth Vader to find the Millennium Falcon, Boba Fett left cloud city with Han Solo’s frozen body in carbonite, to deliver him to Jabba The Hutt. He established himself in a strong way for the short amount of screen time he had in the film. He was a new mysterious villain who had a cool outfit with a bad ass helmet and he said very little. He had about 25 seconds worth of dialogue in the movie but it was all he needed.

0 Is Boba Fett The Most Overrated Star Wars Character Ever?

Those 25 seconds, the cool outfit and the aura he portrayed would eventually spawn a large and loyal following of people that custom modify versions of Bobaba Fett’s costume and gather at comic conventions and other genre gatherings, called the Mandalorian Mercs.

All of the was very cool.

THE CASE AGAINST BOBA FETT”s COOLNESS:

The decline of coolness begins and ends in Return of thge Jedi. Boba Fett is at Jabba’s palace in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi when Solo’s rescuers are captured. Fett is just hangin’ out. He then travels on Jabba’s sail barge to the sarlacc pit, where the Luke, Han Lei and Chewbacca are to be thrown into the monstrous cavern. Boba Fett attempts to intervene when the prisoners mount an escape. In a pathetically comedic scene Han Solo accidentally makes Fett’s rocket pack malfunction, flinging the bounty hunter into the barge, and then he tumbles to his inferred death into the Sarlacc’s mouth. The Sarlac then burps as Fett’s screaming ceases.

That is the last Boba Fett is seen in the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy.

Boba Fett Flying Sketch ACEO by i m catmonkey Is Boba Fett The Most Overrated Star Wars Character Ever?

THE CASE FOR BOBA FETT BEING OVERRATED:

Well…aside from his cool look and short but bad ass appearance in Empire the Strikes Back, Boba Fett suffered a chump’s death and was killed by accident.

He was  later revealed to be the child clone of Jango Fett whom he raises as his son – in the second prequal, Attack of the Clones.

Would Boba Fett been cooler, had he never even appeared in Return of the Jedi? George Lucas as quoated as wishing that if he knew the popularity Fett would gain among fans, he would have given him a “more exciting” death.

Ultimately what that equates to is Geroge Lucas, his creator admitting to having failed Fett.

Now don’t get me wrong, Fett is a great design, originally concepted by Ralph McQuarrie, one of my favorite artists of all time.  But his death is weak. Really weak. Unforgivably weak.

He’s not in the three films very much and other than being the galactic UPS delivery for Jabba the Hutt, he’s not much of anything else in the films. And the films are really all I am judging this on.

I also was not a big fan of the whole Jango Fett, clone connection either. It seems that the more we learn about Boba Fett, the less cool he gets. He was at his peak at the End of Empire Strikes Back and it has been downhill ever since.

VERDICT: YES, BOBA FETT IS OVERRATED

But I will always love his design and will remember those years that I had as a child in first and second grade, salivating for more information about Boba Fett and waiting for the Return of the Jedi. Sorry Merc pals!

During the Holidays, Please Remember to Help the Ronnie James Dio Cancer Fund

With Christmas just passing us by and the New Year of 2012 fast approaching, I would like to call attention to a charity that I believe in very much.

The Ronnie James Dio, Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.

Back in August, we launched the official soundtrack to Gates, the first online comic form Heavy Metal Magazine. In homage to the 1981 Heavy Metal movie. As the writer and creator of the Gates franchise, I really wanted a soundtrack to accompany the science fiction/fantasy/horror story.

Much like the original soundtrack to this movie, the music spans the genres from hardcore heavy metal to space rock and electronic ambient.

In dedication to the late Metal Sorcerer, Ronnie James Dio, all net proceeds from the sale of the soundtrack to the sci fi webcomic, will benefit the Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund.”

GatesSoundtrackVolume1 During the Holidays, Please Remember to Help the Ronnie James Dio Cancer FundRonnie James Dio appeared on the 1981 soundtrack for the Heavy Metal film while a member of Black Sabbath, and their song The Mob Rules is a HUGE inspiration to me and my artwork. Dio is a local, hometown upstate New York hero to me as well, so it was fitting to dedicate this soundtrack to his cause.

I TAKE CANCER PERSONALLY, I WISH EVERYONE DID:

Me, Hal Hefner, the creator of Heavy Metal Presents: Gates lost my dad to Cancer on January 4, 1998. I really want to honor him by upping the ante with the Cancer fund donations.

I NEED YOUR HELP.

I worked really hard on this project, with artists LoveKrafty and the band Inside The Black to create an all-new musical score to accompany the comic. I also brought in other artists including Deltanaut featuring Nick Menza, a great up and coming metal band out of Arizona called, Hemoptysis and the 80′s hair metal band, Black ‘N Blue amongst other rising musical stars such as Rusty Eye, and Friend Slash Lover, to complete the comic’s music companion.

Corey Marshall, the well known voice actor, as the voice of Ryo, in the game Shenmue also appears on the Soundtrack to Gates as the voice of Gates himself.

PLEASE BUY THE SOUNDTRACK  NOW…

AND MAKE A DONATION TO THE RONNIE JAMES DIO STAND UP AND SHOUT CANCER FUND

Below you will find the full track listing of the bands and songs on the soundtrack.

Please purchase your copy now while it is available for download on iTunes and AmazonMP3, and 100% of the proceeds are benefiting the Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund.”

Your kindness and generousness is much appreciated on behalf of myself, all of the bands on the soundtrack and the Ronnie James Dio Cancer Fund.

Heavy Metal Presents Gates Dedicates The Soundtrack To The Music Of Ronnie James Dio.

Dio, was an amazing entertainer that defined a genre. We honor him for his work on the original Heavy Metal movie and the constant use of fantasy themes on his album covers, videos and more. May his memories, creative spirits and his soul live on forever.

Heavy Metal Presents: Gates has worked with artists to create a new soundtrack for the comic, the first from Heavy Metal in over ten years. Readers of the web comic can stream music produced specifically for the comic while on the site.

The Soundtrack will be released in several volumes and the first Volume he will be released for sale digitally on July 19, 2011. All net proceeds from the sale of the soundtrack will be donated to the Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund.”

Policing Your Mind With Totalitarian Ways – Who Are The Brain Police?

by Hef on December 22, 2011 at 10:19 am
Share

Frank Zappa and the Mother’s of Invention asked the question many years ago…WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE?

0 Policing Your Mind With Totalitarian Ways Who Are The Brain Police?

And people like George Orwell and Aldous Huxley posed  a similar question in 1984 and Brave New World respectively. More than ever, 1984 has become 2012 and Brave New World is Brave Present World.

ARE WE LIVING IN A WORLD WHERE WE DON’T OWN OUR OWN THOUGHTS ANYMORE?

There was a great phrase from the 60′s – “KILL YOUR TV!”…now it coold be updated to say “KILL YOUR COMPUTER!”

Why? Well now they get us in every way through our computers…

ADVERTISING: tells you what is cool, what to gadget to buy, what to wear and who to be like.

THE NEWS:  ONLY tells you what the big corporations and political backers that own them want you to hear. (Has anyone heard any coverage on Bill S.1867??? I didn’t think so)

SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook, Twitter, Your Phone – TEXT, TEXT, TEXT, Your friend read this article about Kim Kardashian’s vagina, please share and RT it.

POLITICS: The 2 party dived is a lie to keep you occupied so that you don’t see what they are really doing. They tell you what they want you to hear so you elect them and then they back peddle and become the same puppet like douche-bag that you thought you voted out. THE TWO PARTY POLITICAL SYSTEM IS A FARCE

THE WORKPLACE: Cameras on your computer, cameras in your office watching you, spy ware on your computer monitoring your work and everything you do. Your employers WATCH YOU!

BAM! That is the BRAIN POLICE….

They tell you what to think, what’s important and what’s not. But who controls the Brain Police? hmmmmm….I’ll leave that for another day.

HOW IS THIS RELEVANT TO GATES?

THE CONGENEMENT ARE THE BRAIN POLICE IN GATES:
But needless to say, that is why I do what I do for Gates. The ConGenement are the Brain Police and the rulers of all that is thought in the Gates universe. They are the byproduct of what would happen if science and technology formed their own religion to control the masses.

Closed circuit televisions used to control your mind? YES!

Richard Corben’s Den and the Influence on Hal Hefner’s Comic Book Gates

by Hef on December 17, 2011 at 12:02 am
Share

Gates is a an epic science fiction comic book, created by Hal Hefner (me) and currently being presented by Heavy Metal Magazine as an online comic. As of 12/16/2011 there are 52 pages of the comic book posted online and available for free. Although the majority of the book thus far takes place in a dystopian setting, it’s future will eventually expand into a whole other realm of epic science fiction and fantasy proportions.

As the creator of this universe, as both artist and writer, I have several major influences both inside and outside of the Heavy Metal universe. Moebius, HG Wells, Rod Serling, Phillip K. Dick, Aldous Huxley, Ray Bradbury, Frank Herbert, Frank Frazetta and many more.  But one inspiration that has been very huge on me creatively is Richard Corben.

For those of you unfamiliar with Richard Corben, he is an ass kicking  American illustrator and comic book artist, that is best known for his comics featured in Heavy Metal Magazine.

Bloodstar Richard Corbens Den and the Influence on Hal Hefners Comic Book Gates Corben first became affiliated with Heavy Metal Magazine n 1975, when Moebius, Druillet, and Jean-Pierre Dionnet began publishing the original version of the magazine, Métal Hurlant in France.  Corben submitted some of his stories to them and the rest is history.  Corben then continued his work for the franchise in America, when it was called Heavy Metal. In 1976  Corben adapted a very cool, short Robert E. Howard story in an early graphic novel, Bloodstar.

BLOODSTAR: THE FIRST GRAPHIC NOVEL
Corben’s Bloodstar was the first graphic novel to call itself a “graphic novel” in print and even labeled itself that in its introduction and dust jacket. It was published by The Morning Star Press in a limited signed and numbered edition and is hailed as the beginning of Graphic Novels.

DEN:
Corben’s most influential story drawn for Heavy Metal was Den, which had begun in the short film Neverwhere as well as short story in the underground publication, Grim Wit #2.

Below is the short film Neverwhere: Parts 1 & 2

0 Richard Corbens Den and the Influence on Hal Hefners Comic Book Gates 0 Richard Corbens Den and the Influence on Hal Hefners Comic Book Gates

The saga of Den is epic in every way and is a fantasy sci-fi series about the adventures of a young nerd, who travels to Neverwhere. Neverwhere is a rich universe that is said to take inspirational nods from Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age, H. P. Lovecraft’s horror dimensions as well as Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Barsoom. In  Neverwehere the young nerd boy is transformed into an enormously endowed nude muscleman like super hero, who has erotic adventures in an alien world of outrageous dangers, hideous monsters, and sexy nude women.

This story was also adapted into a highly abridged format in the animated film Heavy Metal, in which Den was voiced by none other than Canadian, comedy legend, John Candy.

Corben’s an artist and writer and his work is epic, detailed an inspiration to me on so many levels. Below are some of the images from Den and a few other selected works.

The ConGenement, A Reflection of Modern Government Policies in the US

by Hef on December 15, 2011 at 1:20 am
Share

The ConGenement are watching, always. They are…Evil Government incarnate. Oppressive. Hypocritical. Crooked. Greedy. Compassionless. Phony. Socialist. Communist.

A reflection of modern times? Absolutely.

With the distrust and disdain for the United States government and their inability to run our country honestly, compassionately and with integrity–at an all time high, the ConGenement are an absolute reflection of modern times.

Ruling their people with an iron clad fist, the ConGenement, knows and sees everything.

“Micro management” is a term often used for the management style of a company or person. But this can alos be applied to our every day lives in America as we are micro managed everywhere. And aisde from being micro managed by an individual level at work, this can also be applied to  social monitoring policies by companies too.

In modern times, companies monitor workers in many ways. For exemple, I worked for a company that put in cameras in our office and claimed that they we were putting in video walls so each office could see each other. Everyone in our office was skeptical and for good reason as the video walls—never happened. BUT the cameras still remained and they could see us but we could see nothing else. It was clearly just a monitoring system to watch us.

Companies also monitor your computer activity, from email and document racking, to systems that allow them to see what you are doing in real time, while you are doing it. Real time “spy-ware” is what I like to call it.

Our life at work is now micro managed in every way. Cameras on street corners and all sorts of laws that are being created to “protect us” from “terrorists” like the Patriot Act and S.1867 are really just tools that erode our rights and make us vulnerable to more invasive monitoring techniques.

Through Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites, we can be monitored by anyone. We willfully give up our information. We take pictures of our family, friends and food. We “check-in” everywhere to let everyone know where we are. Social media has given us the power to willfully give up our personal info for all to see, read, watch, share, tweet and like!
SCIENCE + TECHNOLOGY + RELIGION + GOVERNEMENT = THE CONGENEMENT

H.G. Wells, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Phillip K. Dick are four main inspirational authors I have channeled to create the ConGenement. The ConGenement were created to oppress, crush and mangle the human race. They create people like gods and they control people like rats in a cage. They use religion and technology to do so. Somewhere in between Scientology, Born Again Christians and the Occult you will find the ConGenement.

They are radical Transhumanists that have wielded technology backed by ideology.

The ConGenement are the 1%. The ConGenement are the rich, the technologically wealthy, the ideologically bigoted and the scientifically oppressive all rolled into one.

A reflection of modern times? Absolutely.

Welcome back ConGenement, welcome back, welcome back, welcome baaaaaaaaaaaack.
